I was chatting with one of my cousins today, and the thought occurred to me that some people are just hard-wired to sell, which sometimes translates into forcing their will on others. You know what I mean, like those folks who offer you whatever product, but five minutes later, they're still trying to convince you you're doing something wrong because you don't subscribe to what they want you to have, or like you're less intelligent for choosing anything else? They piss me off, but I had to learn to step back and see them for what they do--not necessarily who they are. They sell to earn, promote themselves, or extend awareness to others based on what they themselves have come to believe in.
It's a lot like how people say Jehovah's Witnesses come trying to convert people or whatever. Perhaps you thought they were argumentative, and perhaps that particular group or individual was; you have the option of listening to ascertain what they're really saying to you, or of stopping them right off and shutting down. But why not for a second see what's being offered, and whether you can actually use it?
Whatever the information, product, or service--those offering it should at the very least be trained in human behavior and non-confrontational communication methods so the message and benefits are not lost through the method of approach. Know your audience, check yourself, and don't be predatory. I mean, you ARE trying to help me, right? It should feel like it. I'm just saying....
